Some people say moderation doesn’t work but in my experience, it does. I have a close family member that for a substantial period of their life they were addicted to crack cocaine. They got clean and they found that weed/cannabis/marijuana helps calm and put to rest that constant need and desire to go and snort some crack or even smoke it. They have been sober for about 12 to 13 years, there’s been slip ups but with lots of support and understanding they will always make it through. I’m so glad that Demi has such a big support system and the freedom to try and see what does and what doesn’t work for her. We’re all different and we shouldn’t ever generalize because every body copes with certain things and adapts to situations in the best way they can.

With alcohol, that’s a different story... I just hope she stays strong and healthy.

The fact that when i hear her voice shake when she's talking, I know that's her anxiety, because I do the exact same thing. 🥺 I wish she understood how much of an impact this series is making!

I get the impression she feels guilty about her OD & relapse, but isn’t actually ready to be sober. So, she walks the line - and tries moderation. It appeases her enablers, and relieves her guilt. She feels in control & is still able to indulge - all while feeling guilt free since they all condone her approach. I pray this works for her, and wish her only the best.

I smoke and am clean mostly. I say no to alcohol because I don’t like it and I don’t want to. But I need to keep boundaries with weed. If I ever find my self not being about to go to work see family or go days with out smoking, then I’ll have to address it and definitely hope I would not smoke anymore if it became an issue. I said clean mostly because in my journey I’ve relapsed a lot and it’s never had anything to do with weed. I just am addicted to heroin. I did date some one in recovery who knew he couldn’t smoke, he was ok with me smoking around him. But if I wasn’t able to not smoke around him as a respect thing then that would have been an issue for me. So after he told me I decided not to smoke around him or before seeing him. You just need to take it all day by day. I pray for Demi. I’ve over dosed so many times it never stops you from using and I wish it did, because so many more people would stay clean. Stay strong my fellow sober people and those who need to find their way.

as she said, she's a very "all or nothing" kind of person, maybe moderation can work for her, maybe an abrupt and absolute restriction of her drug use will dig her deeper into addiction causing a stronger relapse later. Nobody knows, I hope she finds her path and redefines her relationship with substances.

Heres the thing, moderation might not work for someone who is recovering from alcoholism or drug addiction, but abstinence doesn't work for someone recovering from am eating disorder. And, speaking from experience, if my two recovery paths are not similar or close to each other I lose sight of one of them. Moderation helps me with both kinds of recovery. Balance helps me with both. But when I was told to stop smoking and drinking forever I fell back to my eating disorder to cope immediately. When I was told I needed to fix my eating disorder (purposely being vauge about my habits here) I started using again. I was back and forth for years but now I am exceling in my life. I have maintained a "healthy" body for over two years while having an occasional drink or smoke when I'm with friends, not to cope. "Healthy" because I did irreversible damage in my eating disorder. And it has worked for me so far. But this is a JOURNEY. It changes a lot over time. It has ups and downs. And what I'm doing now might not work for whatever I want to do in the future. I hope the best for Demi. Its a journey. And all the haters that don't get it, I really am so happy for you that you don't get it.

Only someone who is an alcoholic/addict themselves can understand this but it’s clear as day to me what’s she’s doing because I’ve done it myself. She’s trying to convince the people in her life that she is in control because she doesn’t want to stop using. Demi almost died from fentanyl. You don’t try to moderate after ODing from the most dangerous drug out there. There is a reason why we as addicts MUST listen to other people in recovery because our lives depend on it. That’s why there are so many different types of meetings for us to connect with each other and discuss when we are having difficulties or doubt. The facts show people who live long lives with addiction (Elton John) don’t get there by moderation. We must listen to others who have struggled and changed. When we don’t and only listen to ourselves we can justify very dangerous behavior because addiction is a disease that tells you, you don’t have it at all costs. Which is one of the reasons why it’s so deadly. It’s why you see people dying from cirrhosis of the liver still drinking thinking they have it under control. Demi is in extreme denial and it’s very sad to watch. I’m sorry but the truth is this will not end well.

I have also had a eating disorder. it sounds like she would possibly really benefit from intuitive eating with more of a focus on eating for what your body is guiding you to do rather than sticking to a strict diet. It sounds like she is doing it a bit in terms of freeing herself to eat what she likes and finding moderation in her eating. As someone who has struggled with alcohol addition, I found that the whole complete abstinence idea never worked for me. I had a black and white thinking as well and it meant that when I drank, I drank completely over the top as it was my one chance to have alcohol. Instead I would have one cider a few nights a week and with therapy it really addressed my mental health issues to a point where I wasn't binge drinking any more. Of course this isn't a straight road, when I am in a depressive episode I often do struggle with relapse. It is much easier for me tho to get out of relapses with moderation than if I was to go with I am never drinking again.
