Answer is simple. When they demand their rights, they are at human level. (some sort of cyborg thing that is) That can only happen when Human merges with A.I.

Ohhh.... I never thought of robots making BETTER robots. Just... More. Thats fuqin scary. What if they rend organic life to make Biomechs like Dr. Gero or creepy architecture Oryx? I mean, we turned seashells into pavement. Im sure that would traumatize advanced cephalopods.

Automated intelligence wouldn't necessitate pain since that would require nerve endings and since they are in control of their own evolution they could transform to their advantage.

The future problem I foresee is that AI mimics human knowledge. This will allow them to appear nearly identical to humans. Humans will be able to influence them, and they will be able to influence humans. Due to the androids super intelligence, humans will be fascinated with them. A person can have a relationship with them just as much as they could with another human. With current tech, and droids being created with nonliving materials, I doubt they are self aware. However if their control center is a living mind, I'd conclude they are self aware. I believe consciousness is only possible if its source is living.

I love this question. I also love sci-fi cuz it poses questions like this regularly and gets you thinking. Like The Positronic Man by Asimov that they later adapted into a movie called the Bicentennial Man starring Robin Williams. Also, Star Trek:TNG covered this really well in Season 2 episode 9. Just for anyone interested.

A better question: how can we limit the rights ascension to ones who can say whenever they want they are suffering? If we garantee then rights whenever they say they need, the situatuon will be very beneficious for them, giving them the power to change anything they want. An advice: I'm not only talking about robots, but about a more present matter.

A machine can simulate to have emotions but it won't because it doesn't have the components it take for something to be alive, a robot having coounces means it's alive and it can't be alive then it would be a robot, to have councesnes it would have to be made in a more natural way like.
