Organic food is a huge trend: it promises a healthier and better life. But can Organic food really live up to the expectations or is it just baloney?

Please don't cause wrong perception. Organic food is better in every way for our health. Of course demand is rising and they must produce more food in less time. But that doesn't mean they don't use lots of unhealthy chemicals. Organic food is best, but unfortunately population gets higher every year, which means we will have unhealthy foods as the years go by :')

Remember: organic is an ideology. It's a belief system that people willingly adopt, for all manner of reasons. Like veganism or socialism, people want to believe in it. Facts don't always enter the equation.

If you want to buy food good for the environment, the solution isn't to buy local food, but to just forget about that goal entirely. Individual action can only reduce your emissions by about 40%, and which vegetables you buy is a miniscule fraction of that. Instead of buying local, just say the phrase "individual action can't solve climate change, the government does the majority of it".

An area of this issue that wasn't discussed is topsoil loss due to aggressive tilling and buildup of salts in soil from chemical fertilizers used in conventional agriculture systems. My understanding is that use of chemical fertilizers, particularly nitrate salts, over a long period of time is detrimental to the microbiome in the soil and has led to the depletion of soils and of soil organisms in areas farmed using conventional systems. The loosening of organic standards has definitely allowed for organic systems to fall into the same problems. However in terms of environmental impact, this seems to have mostly been focused on carbon emissions and power usage as forms of environmental impact while missing what I understand to be very pertinent issues of topsoil loss and loss of soil biodiversity in modern industrial agricultural practices.

I lived in Almería, the region of Spain where plasticultura for vegetables is *the* thing, and it couldn't be less sustainable. The amount of plastic pollution and over-abstraction of groundwater from a a desert region with almost no rainfall is completely out of control, and has blighted one of the most unique and fragile ecosystems in Europe. This isn't knocking conventional over organic, but rather about responsible land and resource use, and producing crops that are suited to the climate and terrain - for Almería this would be something like dates, almonds, olives or dryland varieties of wheat - not tomatoes, leafy greens and the likes.

I understand your point, but organic is WAY better, for so many countless reasons! GMO stands for GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISM, and it means it has a high risk of harmful pesticides! I try to only eat organic food. Don't believe anything that some person says just because they think avoiding poison isn't that important... Everyone should make their own decisions. Get this: GENETICALLY ENGINEERED BIOPESTICIDES: You take a big tank of bacteria and have them secrete some peptide (that you invented and gave them DNA to code it) - an enzyme that kills one specific pest (or group of pests) and no other - so it doesn't harm innocent creatures (like fish or bees). Also, because it's just a peptide molecule, it biodegrades into perfectly natural and harmless aminoacids, so you can spray this pesticide without worry about the ecosystem. When people say genetic engineering can save the world, THIS is the kind of stuff they mean. It's inspiring. Too bad this "organic" fad specifically excludes GM. It's just people's TECHNOPHOBIA. So sad and frustrating.
Prieš 28 dienųJavier L
oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooo interesante
Prieš 28 dienųLex Prontera
Important things about 01:15 not mentioned: 1.The NATURAL PESTICIDES plants produce have evolved for millions of years to combat their 2 biggest natural enemies: INSECTS and LARGE MAMMALS. Guess what we are! Those are specifically (meant to be) toxic to us. I learned this from my ecology professor at university. Synthetic pesticides can be chemically tailored to harm pests more and humans less. That's their whole point, in fact. 2. Synthetic pesticides are sprayed on the surface. You don't actually eat them. You peel them off, wash them off, or both. This is especially true for things like potatoes, where the pesticide-protected leaves are not even the same part of the plant as the underground tubers we eat. This is PRECISELY an advantage that a plant's self-produced toxins DO NOT have. They are in its cells. Bites from insects actually stimulate toxic responses, so it's a feedback loop, too! 3. Also, metabolism: the more material & energy the plant spends on making toxins, the less it invests in growing the delicious nutritious fruit/seed tissue we eat, so it's either a smaller yield, longer growth time (and expense) or both. 4. One promising eco-friendly area are GENETICALLY ENGINEERED BIOPESTICIDES: Basically, you take a big tank of bacteria and have them secrete some peptide (that you invented and gave them DNA to code it), an enzyme that kills one specific pest (or group of pests) and no other, so it doesn't harm innocent creatures (like fish or bees). Also, because it's just a peptide molecule, it biodegrades into perfectly natural and harmless aminoacids, so you can spray this pesticide without worry about the ecosystem.
Prieš 28 dienųJeffJests
@Lex Prontera I agree with that. If the seed was digested, it would be useless in reproduction.
Prieš 10 dienųLex Prontera
The fruit, yes, so the seed can be spread, but NOT the seed itself, or other organs like stems, leaves, roots. No benefit from that. ALSO, it needs to be an animal that actually spreads the seed, like a bird, not one that destroys it, like an insect.

(so I noted that he has a lot of citations in the description and I have updated my comment) bullshit video - it's a rotten video because there's literally no worthwhile facts/data that compare the two from a SINGLE BASELINE. There are problems with this video, namely: Case 1. He goes on shifting the baseline for comparison for each point Case 2. in some cases he portrays equality for organic farming as somehow being bad A. Organic farming is not MORE nutritious than.. (which fits Case 2) B. OGF uses less pesticide not zero (because it's not forbidden - natural pesticides can be used in organic) - in the US, they test; fungi are poisonous on either. Fits Case 1 C. study says no benefit to environment - does not explain why or how the magical study got those results; land use greater, rising demand for organic causes damage; fraud - conventional repackaged as organic. Fits Case 1,2 D. Organic people can be emotional and irrational Take for example: "land use greater" - well conventional is pretty much world-over so claiming organic causes increased land use - what's his baseline for comparison? Total acreage? Acreage over last x years? Additionally with point-A/nutrition, he claims they are the same nutritional value but then why discuss that - because he can paint organic negatively: as if organic was supposed to be magically more nutritious.. He doesn't factor in the cost of agricultural inputs to the farmer/country, the fact that many cities can use land more efficiently, the fact that human waste is just flushed down the toilet (all opportunities for organic to step in and save the day by composting human waste, by gardening within the cities).

Well, foe people with auto-immunity issues like me, it certainly makes a difference; for our gut "leeks" chemicals into the blood stream.
Prieš mėnmedronhos
@JeffJests Thanks, that's interesting.Than, the "holes" must be smaller than those you talk about and for sure they already aren't a fun thing to have. Only recently has medicine started recognizing this as a real condition. I'm a patient with leaky gut, being treated by a doctor who has specialized on functional medicine. If you have any auto-immune problem, check it out; it may improve your life a lot. Cheers!
Prieš 3 dienasJeffJests
@medronhos NO! Bacteria that are supposed to be in the gut can be lethal in other parts of the body! The gut brings nutrients straight into the bloodstream and will also bring bacteria if a larger hole is present. This will cause bacteremia as an infection of the blood takes place. The body will undergo sepsis where blood pressure drops as a last ditch effort is sent by your body. Then, without immediate medical attention, you die. That's what happened to Houdini!
Prieš 3 dienasmedronhos
@JeffJests LOL... I'm not sure if a leaky gut condition lets bacteria pass through, anyway it won't hurt you to check out what it is. Dr. Axe for instance explains a lot about it. Good luck Jeff
Prieš 3 dienasJeffJests
@medronhos If your intestines have holes in them that are big enough to let toxins and bacteria in, I would take you to the hospital as to avoid sepsis.
Prieš 3 dienasmedronhos
@JeffJests Hi Jeff, that's right. But the immune system is only doing its job. The real trouble is that the natural micro-holes we all have on our small intestine (which allow the nutriments from food to pass into the blood stream) can get bigger than they should be, when the gut is damaged and so, all kinds of elements that should be retained inside it and follow their way to the exit, pass through those holes instead, and reach the blood blood stream. From there, these elements, like toxins for exemple, will be stuck in different parts of the body. The immune system detects them and rightfully identifies them as strange bodies and attacks them, causing inflammation and/or oder disorders. This damage is called hyper-permeability or more commonly "leaky gut". There are doctors who address this situation (which is the real origin of many chronic ailments) usually they practice functional or integrative medicine. Good courage and take care
