Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell
We created our first app ‘Universe in a Nutshell’, together with Tim Urban of Wait but Why! You can get it here: Appstore: http://kgs.link/universe-app-ios Google Playstore: http://kgs.link/universe-app-android Oh boy. Making an app is hard. It seemed so easy when we started. We underestimated the necessary work load and all the potential problems tenfold – this is not a figure of speech, this took ten times longer than we thought it would. And we are sort of used to working on big projects. So the first update to the app should hopefully be here in the next 24 hours (we are waiting for approval of the update in the app stores) – it will fix a bunch of small things that slipped through. We’ll constantly improve this thing because while it was honestly a horrible nightmare to make, it also was fun and we want to get better at it and make more things in the future. In case you don’t know Wait but Why btw, it is the best and most fun blog on the internet (https://waitbutwhy.com/2020/09/universe.html) and if you don’t know it you should change that like right now. Tim and I collaborated for the first time in 2013 and we have been good friends ever since. And this thing was something we started talking about years ago. So what is this thing we made and why? You can seamlessly travel from the smallest things in existence, past the coronavirus, human cells and dinosaurs all the way to the largest stars and galaxies and marvel at the whole observable universe. You can learn more about each object or simply enjoy the sheer scale of it all. It’s a fun plaything. The app is inspired by the “scale of the universe” website by the Huang Twins that Tim and I spent a lot of time with when it came out years ago – and felt that it was finally time to create a Wait but Why and Kurzgesagt version. There are no in-app purchases and no ads. All future updates are included! Since this is our first app we would love to hear your feedback so we can improve it over time. Leave us a five star review if you want to support it. Kurzgesagt and all the projects we do are mostly funded by viewers like you. So if you like the app we’ll make more digital things in future! Ok! Thank you for reading – Philipp

Once a main sequence star ignites, why wouldn't the solar wind it creates not drive away any additional hydrogen from accumulating and making it bigger? Is the answer that it just gobbles up other nearby stars or is that just one answer to my question?

Given that Stephenson 2-18 is about 2150 solar radii and the radius of the earth is about 6,378 kilometres, placing the sun on the surface of Stephenson 2-18 is like placing a sphere with a 3 kilometre radius on the surface of the earth, so compared to the largest star in the universe the sun is rather more impressive than a human compared to earth.

The app should be free with an option to donate like Wikipedia. I honestly really want this I love the channels content but I am unemployed and receiving no financial help from the government. I may have to sell this laptop to eat soon. I am just very disappointed there is no option for impoverished & displaced (due to Corona) individuals such as myself. :'(
Prieš 22 valMichael Shuey
They give all the dimensions and scales as though they know what they’re talking about and as though it’s been proven when, in reality, modern astronomers have no idea what they’re talking about. All of the “data” given is just the result of guessing and wild imaginations. Disgusting.
Prieš 22 valMichael Shuey
@Ahmad Rashiq I don’t find anything at all to be amusing. So, the claim is that a stars mass is calculated on how bright it is. You find nothing lacking in this doctrinal argument? 1. This presupposes that you have an established point of reference for mass that is physically measurable. 2. This presupposes that you have an established point of reference for distance that is physically measurable. 3. “Color of a star” is hardly a point of reference since you cannot overcome chromatic aberration or admixture of spectral wavelengths. Again, instead of regurgitating your cult doctrine under which we all had to sit in times past, I’m asking you for a rigorous proof using the scientific method. This request of mine is, of course, rhetorical since we both know that neither you nor anyone else can provide it. I’m sorry that you considered yourself a worthy apologist for the popular cult doctrines you’ve been taught since your youth and how you supposed that simple regurgitation of such doctrines would be sufficient to defend them.
Prieš 8 valAhmad Rashiq
@Michael Shuey 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I really appreciate your "disgusting" attitude. Anyway, a star's mass is calculated going by how bright it is (there is a certain HR diagram o simplify things). Based on the color of star (color is directly related to temperature and mass), we can ascertain the mass a star must have to power the nuclear fusion at the core to produce that color. A smaller more practical example would be a bomb. Based on the mass of explosives, we conclude the energy radiated by the explosion.
Prieš 10 valMichael Shuey
@Ahmad Rashiq if you recall, I simply stated that there was no proof for the claims made in this video and that, as such, it’s disgusting cult like thinking. The onus is not on me to provide any rigorous proof, rather, the onus is on you and other members of your cult. I’ve asked twice that you prove the claims made in this video and twice you ignored my request. I would have thought you’d be excited and proud to show such proof but it’s evident you are able to provide no such thing.
Prieš 10 valAhmad Rashiq
@Michael Shuey please enlighten me "how" the distance increased by 70millon miles over 300 years when the earth itself is 90million miles from the Sun. Since you are familiar with spectrometers, I really hope you are also familiar with shift in spectra (doppler effect) due to the motion of bodies. I think you are smarter than me, having not regurgitated anything, but you haven't produced any evidence apart from far from truth hypothesis which you deem real in your Cinderella world.
Prieš 10 valMichael Shuey
@Ahmad Rashiq Sure, I’m familiar with identifying gases through the use of spectrometers. However, since the distance of the sun from the earth has “increased” 70 million plus miles over the last 300 years using the same “calculations” , not only does the spectrum analysis now expose itself to aberration and distortion due to wavelength decay but just the mention of it tells me you regurgitate what you’ve been and nothing more. Like a good little cult member you don’t think on your own. Again, please do the math for us and prove the distance of any planet from the earth. Don’t just regurgitate religious talking points from what you’ve been taught. This is the real world, it’s time to prove it.

NOW, you see why scientific Atheist like me say how silly one of mans made up Gods from thousands of years ago made all this and maintain it??? We have found roving black holes out there travelling along destroying indiscriminately what ever they come near and whats that "Purpose" NO, sadly, many are slowly realising the universe; at least the one we live in, is just a massive lots of larger suns churning out material that coalesces into metals and life and forming planets and some having species where they can survive and adapt to conditions as on Earth. THEN these suns die off and expand taking all that life away usually as those planets are closest to the sun. Purpose?? What ever all this mess we exist in, theres no obvious rime or reason, just randomness and luck you live where you live and even earth is so far from the next planetary life, so discovery might not be possible but thats the price for living in a stable section of the galaxy and survived this long. you can worship one of the thousand gods from our fearful imagination in the past, or you can embrace the reality of a changing physical universe always moving and evolving and humans like all past species will likely die out or evolve to something else in time and we cant do anything about that except except it and make the best of our time to discover more of our existence. Quantum mechanics is slowly showing us that the emptiness of space is actually alive and the key to matter holding galaxies from spinning apart?, so much we dont know but given how strange and varied our planet and solar system is, wouldnt the universe building blocks too be way out there too? Is it all totally empty of consciousness that came into being and is just a massive recycling physics machine? or was the "nothing" responsible for our physics here and other universes diff to ours with diff rules as the space is diff too? My guess is, given physics seems to be constant out, DNA and evolution of species may also be logically follow same principles, so we will find similar DNA/RNA our there in other galaxies? Is all life connected because of this and thus we are all related to other aliens maybe? If life floats around after made by large suns, then some life should be related given a certain area circumference? Interesting thought that within a hundred light years perhaps all life is related? Just a idea and we will be able to examine cells ect to determine that if/when we discover other life alive or extinct. Do they have gods too and will will fight over which is the "true" one like we do here on Earth? I hope that wont happen and only science and reason prevails....
