The economics of this argument are very dubious. The logic of the "7 times more cancer research" doesn't make any sense. In order to get that 7 times more research, a lot of money would have to be invested in to bringing up much of the human population to the point where it could contribute to that research. Which means that you forego much of that cancer research. And economic development was not a zero sum game in ancient history. There has always been innovation and economic improvements.

1:54 - 2:02 WOW, nice nice summary of inventions and discoveries of Industrial Revolution, 19th, 20th and 21st century, antibiotics kill bacteria (in 20th century we've discovered a lot of new medicines, vaccines and antibiotics which cured a lot of diseases), power plants deliver energy (in 19th and 20th century we've discovered how to produce electricity from fossil fuels and nuclear fission), cell phones connect us (from 1980s to today phones have changed from brick size and weight devices only for making calls and sending messages, to newspaper thick devices, not only for calling and sending messages, but taking photos, recording videos, browsing the internet and online newspapers, watching YouTube, listening to music and playing different games.), planes (and cars, ships and trains too.) let us travel cheaply (in 20th century they've been explosion of production of cars, ships, planes and trains, which lead to explosion of cheap travels, and companies offering cheap travel by plane or coach or cruise ship or passenger train, causing some countries, especially those that do not have any natural resources for exports to aid their economic growth, to focus on tourism.), fridges store food (in 20th century we've invented fridges and preservatives, flavor enhancers and sweeteners, and food colorings that have changed the production, storage and consumption of food.). Continuous progress in all sectors of the economy for most of us seems normal today, but the discoveries of Industrial Revolution, 19th and 20th century changed our lives in just 8 generations. The change from stagnation and most adults working at agriculture to feed a small group of doctors, painters, kings, priests, and scientists to economic growth and most people working in offices, factories, public services (in energy, water and sewage, waste management, education, public transport, military, health, fire and police), shops, mining and fuel industry (in the extraction, processing and transport of crude oil, gas natural, hard and brown coal, metal ores and rare earth metals.), real estate, restaurants, science and hotels, really was the one the most drastic shift in human history, (the 2nd to be exact, the 1st was the agrarian revolution, when we have abandoned the hunter-gatherer lifestyle in favor of growing plants, breeding animals, building villages, and small towns, and finally cities.).

It was always a Positive sum game, the main difference is the positive sum is growing exponentially like our population. If you look at the rise and fall of empires throughout history you'll see this. As empires rise the overall standard of living increases like with the Rise of the Roman empire. But then something happens, usually some greedy people in power who treat it as a zero sum game or just to lazy to contribute but just wants to take what they want. Eventually the Empire collapses either from outside invaders or internal revolts and most people end off worst off. It's only seems like it was a zero sum game to the untrained eye because the overall pie on the average slowly increased due to the constant rising and falling of empires since a years of growth are then offset by years of decline. After all some of the most successful empires in history revolved heavily around trade because they benefited from specialization which is something that contributes to the positive sum game.

That's a purely Keynesian argument for economy... You see, selfishly-driven innovation doesn't necessarily produce valuable research, or even any research at all, we also can't grow our economy indefinitely because our resources are finite. Human drives are vast and we will (we are) probably end up destroying our planet before people realize it is in their self-interest to conserve it, zero our carbon emissions and promote social and racial equality throughout the globe.

People who protested the need of a lockdown are of zero sum game mindset, their brains are hardwired in a way that +lockdown is equivalent to -lost freedom or -lost jobs, what they didn't anticipate is that if more people follow lockdown sooner, the more likely they will keep their jobs, which in turn keeps their freedom.
Prieš 22 dienasRyorai

Your example with cancer is really frustrating. You can't say put 7x more money into something and expect 7x the initial result. Should we invest in cancer research. Yes. But to make this claim that we should put more money into something it's going to fix it. That's not how life works. You can't throw money at problems and expect them to go away. Sometimes it makes it worse. The cancer piece felt very "off" from the rest of your video content.
